Description

Piece of black dolomite stone used as a road material on the A68 approach to Pathhead Bridge, Midlothian. This item was found on site during refurbishment work (c.1988). The stone is thought to have been laid c.1831.

A second specimen of dolomite stone from the same source came to light following the death of Professor Paxton and has been reunited with the stone acquired by the museum in 2001. This second stone is larger than the one originally acquired (see Image 2). The label on the stone reads “Pathhead Bridge Appr. / Spec.of Macadam c.1831”.
