Description
A medal by Alexander Kirkwood & Son, Edinburgh of unknown purpose.
On the obverse it features a female figure facing left holding dividers with a scroll on her thighs and seated on a box displaying balance scales. Included to her right are a railway bridge (with train crossing), a wheat sheaf, microscope and a telescope. Included below are a magnet, artist’s easel and brushes, mallet and trowel. Included to her left are a lighthouse, sailing ship, wheel, violin, cogged wheel and anvil.
The reverse features a laurel wreath.
It may be an allegory for (Scottish) engineering, industry and life.
Alexander Kirkwood & Son are unable to identify the client for the medal but believe it was struck within the last 40 years.
