Description
Cross-section of a Kilmarnock & Troon Railway cast-iron plate-rail on a wooden plinth with inscription on a brass plate. Found in 1996 at the Laigh Milton Viaduct during its conservation from 1992 to 1997.
Note the wear on the inside of the flange.
The brass plate bears the inscription:
Cross-section of Kilmarnock & Troon Railway cast-iron plate-rail c. 1818, found in 1996 at the world’s oldest public railway viaduct, Laigh Milton.
Presented to its Secretary, Prof. Paxton, by the Laigh Milton Viaduct Conservation Project for his valuable services from 1992-1997 in saving and refurbishing the viaduct.
