To estimate the distance of an object view the object through the viewfinder and centre it and a double image will appear. Holding the tapemeasure, turn the knob until a single sharp image is observed. The distance can be read at the read line on the tape indicator. It is designed to measure distances from 6 ft (1.8 m) to 100 ft (30 m).

The device may need calibration before use.
