Description

Medal to commemorate James Watt engraved by Alfred Joseph Stothard. It was issued by S Parker in the series ‘To Great Men’. Bronze.

Obverse: head of James Watt facing left, engraved after a bust by Francis Leggatt Chantrey, within a decorative leaf border. Inscribed:

‘I WATT
AJ STOTHARD F.
FL CHANTREY. RA D’

Reverse: figure of a woman leaning on a half pillar with draped ribbon with the words ‘TO GREAT MEN’. On the pedestal base is the legend ‘PUBD BY S PARKER LONDON / MDCCCXXVII / T.STOTHARD R.A.D. / A.J. STOTHARD F.’. The rim is raised and the edge is plain.
