Description

Tin of Forth Bridge Paint manufactured by Craig & Rose plc, Edinburgh.

The reverse of the tin has the following text:

If there is one piece of Scottish civil engineering which stands out literally and metaphorically above all other engineering achievements, it must be the Forth Railway Bridge. This massive example of Victorian industrial skill is famed worldwide. Douglas Crawford, Scottish Field.

Iron oxide paint, manufactured under a formula which is kept secret to this present day by its manufacturers, Craig and Rose, has protected this gigantic structure from the vagaries of wind and weather; of storm and tempest, of rust and decay for over 100 years. The bridge’s original coat of paint took 35,000 gallons [160,000 litres] of paint oils and 250 tons of paint.
