Model of the Scottish anchorage plates for the Union Chain Bridge

2019

SKU: 2024/020 Categories: ,

Description

Notional model (approx 1:10 scale) of the Scottish anchorage plates for the Union Chain Bridge. The label on the model states:

Union Chain Suspension Bridge, Berwick-upon-Tweed

Notional model [approx 1:10 scale] of the inaccessible Scottish anchorage ballast plates about 7.3m below road level installed in 1820 and loaded with stones to counteract chain force.

Made by Prof Paxton in 2019 at Heriot-Watt University based on archival sources (no drawings or images existed) and used to demonstrate the concept at lectures. The ends of the chain were secured against the plate either by short pins passing through their eyes, or a slot in specially forged ends, or spear dovetailing.
