B-type recorder for differential pressure water flow meter by George Kent Ltd

c.1896

Description

B-type recorder for differential pressure water (Venturi) flow meter by George Kent Ltd with throat ratio 1:10.75 used to measure the flow of water in a pipe. The chart is headed Cowdenbeath Water.

George Kent Ltd was a well-established firm manufacturing a wide range of domestic and industrial equipment including water flow meters which were used up and down the UK and abroad.

Water flow meters of this type are Venturimeters in which the water passes through a pipe whose diameter is reduced thus bringing about an increase in the velocity of the water which in turn produces a pressure drop. By measuring the pressure drop and knowing the change in pipe diameter (throat ratio), Bernoulli’s principle is used to calculate the water flow (eg cubic feet per minute).

A rotating drum with a paper chart attached was used to record the flow rates for record keeping purposes. The drums could be used on a one day or one week cycle.
