Description
(1) A complete circular wrought band of 250 mm diameter used to secure joints in wooden water pipes (see 2018/037.)
The band was hammered in to the socket end of the hollowed out tree trunk between the bored out section and the outside. This ensured that when the spigot end of the adjacent pipe was pushed into place a tight fit was obtained without risk of splitting the trunk from inside to outside.
This wrought iron band was recovered from the same excavation as the wooden water pipes catalogued as 2018/037.
(2) A 300 mm section of a partially straightened-out circular wrought iron band.
