Description

1 m (approx) length of wooden water pipe of 8 in (200 mm) (approx) external diameter with an internal diameter tapering over its length from 5 in (125 mm) at one end to 3 in (75 mm) at the other. The item is of unknown provenance.

The wider (socket) end of the pipe in Image 2 shows a distinct separation in the wood which is evidence that this end of the pipe had a wrought iron band hammered into it to prevent splitting when the spigot end of the adjacent section of pipe is inserted.

In the collection there is another example of a wooden water pipe excavated in Edinburgh in 2018. It clearly shows a wrought iron band (see https://ice-museum-scotland.hw.ac.uk/product/2018-037/).
