Description

Standard yard in brass subdivided to 1/10th of an inch on one face and 1/8th of an inch on the other, engraved “STANDARD YARD./ADIE & SON EDINBURGH.” and “LEITH DOCK COMMISSION.”. Square section brass tube with solid ends: the brass end pieces appear to be about 91 mm long, with the tube overlapping about 11 mm at the joints. In fitted wooden case.

Used for checking and calibrating the lengths of other measuring devices of up to a yard in length within the Leith Docks Commission area. The item itself would not normally be used for direct measurement.

This item was exhibited at the “Exhibition of Civil Engineering Works”, Glasgow, 21 September – 23 October 1977.
