Description

8 in precision ‘quickset’ level by ER Watts & Son. Used to measure vertical distance between points in conjunction with a levelling staff.

The ‘quickset’ level took less time to set up than a conventional 3 or 4 screw instrument. It has a lilting telescope and a ball joint for rapid setting up. By means of of this joint, used in conjunction with a circular bubble, the level can be roughly leveled and then the final adjustment is made with the slow-motion screw until the main bubble is truly horizontal.

The accuracy of the level depends solely upon the relation of the bubble to the telescope, and is not dependent upon the true verticality of the centre. Since the bubble can be  viewed at the same time of the staff, by means of the bubble reading mirror, there is no possibility of error.
