The private company was founded in 1991 with the privatisation of the Hungarian state-owned company MOM. The three letters represent the Hungarian abbreviated name for the Hungarian Optical Works (Magyar Optical Muvek), which was one of the biggest optical and precision mechanical firms in Central Europe since 1876.
