300 mm section of Edinburgh Corporation cable tramway rail (c.1898) removed during excavations for the new St James Centre at the foot of Leith Street, Edinburgh in 2018.

William Newby Colam was an engineer who participated in the construction of several UK cable tram lines. In this paper, he concentrates on the Edinburgh Northern Cable Tramways, which he designed and built. He presented the paper to the Incorporated Association of Municipal and County Engineers on 26 September 1890.
